As adorable as babies are, you do want them to spend much of their early life fast asleep. Some babies are naturally sleepy and will sleep any place, any time. Others, however, can be somewhat reluctant to go to sleep.
The slightest thing seems to distract them from sleeping and this why a nursery blackout blind can be such a good idea. Luckily you can get blackout blinds in a whole range of colours and nursery patterns to match your baby's room.
When it comes to nursery blackout blinds there seems to be two schools of thought. One is that the room should be totally blacked out, the other is that some light seeping through is fine.
You'll find that the majority of blinds available are free hanging roller blinds that will allow some sunlight to seep round the edges of the blackout material. This is probably a good thing for most people as it means that there is enough darkness for baby to get to sleep but enough light for you during the daytime to pop in and check baby is sleeping later on without having to put a light on.
Some babies really find getting to sleep difficult and the slightest chink of light will allow them to focus their attention on something other than shutting their eyes and drifting off. For these babies total or near total darkness maybe the answer.
Achieving total darkness may be difficult and you may have to have your nursery blackout blind custom made. However if you can't afford this then it is possible to reduce the amount of light seeping around a normal blackout roller blind.
If you are going to hang the blinds outside the window recess then buy them much wider than you need. About three inches either side should be sufficient and the blind should also be able to extend a couple of inches below the windowsill. This will cut out quiet a bit of the light seepage.
If you have the blind inside the recess make sure you measure up as accurately as possible and overlap the blinds over the window frame as far as you can. Placing a couple of self adhesive Velcro pads on either side of the window frame and blind will help further with any light getting in.
Some people worry about getting their baby too used to having blackout blinds around. What happens if you go away on holiday or visiting? You can buy blackouts that you attach to window frames with little suckers which should do the trick.
One very important thing to remember when choosing your nursery blackout blind is the cord. For safety's sake the cord should be short so that a child can't reach it in any way.
